ATLANTA - Mercer University's College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Atlanta is currently developing a Physician Assistant program in conjunction with its educational partnership - Piedmont Healthcare of Atlanta. The graduate program is set to matriculate its inaugural class in January 2008 following successful provisional accreditation by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc.

MACON - Awarding-winning poet Margaret Gibson, the 2007 Ferrol A. Sams, Jr. Distinguished Chair of English at Mercer University, will give three public readings of her work. All of the programs will be at 7 p.m. She will read selected pieces from her recent collections of poems on Thursday, Jan. 25, and from her soon-to-be published memoir, The Prodigal Daughter, on Monday, Feb. 12 in Fickling Hall of the McCorkle Music Building on Mercer's Macon campus. There also will be a dramatic reading of The Vigil: A Poem in Four Voices her book-length poem featuring the voices of four different women, on Monday, Feb. 26, at the Backdoor Theatre on the Macon campus. MACON - John Rolland, M.D., an internationally-recognized author and teacher in the area of caring for patients with chronic and terminal illness, will be the inaugural speaker for a distinguished lecture series hosted by Mercer University's Department of Psychiatry in the School of Medicine. Mercer University President William D. Underwood has announced the appointment of Dr. D. Scott Davis, currently vice provost and a tenured faculty member in the Chemistry Department, to the new position of senior vice provost for research and dean of graduate studies, effective immediately. MACON - Mercer University Provost Horace W. Fleming Jr. has announced his intention to return to the faculty full-time upon the appointment of a new chief academic officer, or no later than January 2008. President William D. Underwood has appointed a 15-member search committee, chaired by Daisy Floyd, dean of Mercer's Walter F. George School of Law, to assist with a national search for Fleming's successor. "Horace for several months has been expressing his desire to return to full-time teaching. He has remained in his administrative post at my request in order to help ensure a smooth transition in university leadership," said Underwood, who assumed the Mercer presidency on July 1, 2006. Life Trustee Tom Watson Brown died Saturday, Jan. 13, after a brief illness. He was 73, Brown, an Atlanta attorney, historian and scholar, became the University's fifth Life Trustee in December 2006. He and the Watson-Brown Foundation have made countless contributions to Mercer University.
