MACON - Mercer University's Townsend School of Music will host a free concert at 2 p.m. Monday, January 15, as the final event of the fourth International Conductors Workshop held Thursday-Monday, January 11-15. Open to the public, the concert will be held in Fickling Hall of the McCorkle Music Building on Mercer's Macon campus. The program will feature works by Beethoven, Mozart and Brahms.
Dr. Thomas G. Estes, Mercer University's senior vice president for finance and administration, has announced his retirement from the university, effective Aug. 31. President William D. Underwood said a national search will begin immediately for Estes' successor. "Tom has faithfully served as Mercer's chief financial officer," Underwood said. "I have found him to be particularly invaluable during the administrative transition of the past year. He is considered a national leader in higher education finance and is deeply committed to Mercer. I am very grateful for Tom's service to this institution and to me personally, and I wish him the very best in retirement."Estes served as senior vice president for finance and administration from 1992 to 2004, when he retired from Mercer. ATLANTA - Beginning on Feb. 22 Mercer University will offer a preparation course for the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). A program of Mercer's College of Continuing and Professional Studies, the course will be offered on Mercer's Cecil B. Day Campus in Atlanta on Thursdays from 5:30 - 9:30 p.m. between Feb. 22 and April 5.
ATLANTA - Noted preacher, lecturer and author Thomas G. Long, Ph.D., will be the featured speaker at the 2007 William L. Self Preaching Lectures on Feb. 19-20 at McAfee School of Theology of Mercer University, 3001 Mercer University Drive, Atlanta. Named by Baylor University in 1996 as one of the 12 most effective preachers in the English-speaking world, Long is the Bandy Professor of Preaching at the Candler School of Theology of Emory University.

MACON-Back by popular demand, singer/songwriter and Grammy nominee John Berry will perform Sunday, Dec. 17, at The Grand Opera House, a performing arts center of Mercer University, located at 651 Mulberry Street in downtown Macon. This year's event offers two performances, a 4 p.m. matinee and an 8 p.m. show. An annual favorite at The Grand Opera House, the concert has sold out for the past six years. The show will feature a number of holiday favorites, mixed with hits from Berry's repertoire. ATLANTA - The holiday season - traditionally a time of family gatherings, gift-giving and celebrations - is a perfect time for family members to give the most loving gift of all, a living will. In 2002, a survey conducted by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation indicated that 15 to 20 percent of Americans had living wills in place; following the Terri Schiavo case in 2005, 37 percent of Americans said they had a living will and 69 percent of those without a living will said the case made them think about getting one. Before you decide to undertake a living will, however, there are a number of factors to consider, say faculty at Mercer University.
