MACON, Ga. - Mercer University awarded an honorary Doctor of Music degree to Mr. Chuck Leavell, keyboardist for the Rolling Stones and forest conservationist, at the main Macon commencement on May 13. Mercer University President R. Kirby Godsey made the presentation after Leavell performed "Georgia on My Mind" for the more than 3,000 people at the University Center. The commencement ceremony was held for the more than 450 graduates of the College of Liberal Arts, Eugene W. Stetson School of Business and Economics, School of Engineering and Tift College of Education, as well as their families.
MACON, Ga. - Mercer University honored music pioneer Philip Michael Walden, a 1962 graduate, with an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree, less than a month after he succumbed to cancer. Walden's son, Philip Walden Jr., accepted the honor from Mercer President and CEO R. Kirby Godsey during commencement on May 13.

ATLANTA - The College of Continuing and Professional Studies of Mercer University will hold a free information session on its new Master of Science in Public Safety Leadership program from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 22, on the University's Atlanta campus. MACON, Ga.- Former Mercer men's basketball standout Wesley Duke has been released by the Denver Broncos after suffering a knee injury last Tuesday, the first day of team camp.
Duke, who was signed as a free agent last year, began the season on Denver's inactive roster then moved to the practice squad and was eventually signed to the active roster on Nov. 15. The native of Norcross first saw action on a kickoff vs. the New York Jets and saw extended playing time at Buffalo Dec. 17, catching his first reception, going for a one-yard touchdown grab. Duke was one of two players on the team whose first professional touch resulted in a touchdown. He recorded a career-high 21-yard reception in the regular-season finale at San Diego on New Year's Eve.
In the AFC playoffs, he saw action on special teams, helping hand the Patriots their first postseason loss in 11 games. He made his first professional start in his second career postseason game, but did not record any...
