ATLANTA - Two students in the Georgia Baptist College of Nursing of Mercer University both proved to be so outstanding that they recently received scholarships from the National Kidney Foundation of Georgia, despite the fact that the inaugural award was designed for only one student annually. Sophomore Olivia Kemp of Fairburn, Ga., and Junior Stephanie Hodgson of Duluth, Ga., received the Judy Wilson Memorial Scholarship, an award designed to assist a student pursuing a nursing degree.
ATLANTA - When first-year pharmacy student Stephanie Perrino took a year off from Mercer University Southern School of Pharmacy last year, it wasn't to work part-time or back pack through Europe. Instead, Perrino traveled to Kuwait with the 1-171 Aviation Regiment of Dobbins Air Reserve Base in Marietta as a chemical operations specialist.
ATLANTA - Mercer University will hold a free community health fair from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19, on the Cecil B. Day campus, 3001 Mercer University Dr., Atlanta. Services are being provided by Georgia Baptist College of Nursing, Mercer Health Systems, the School of Medicine, and the Southern School of Pharmacy.

Macon- Dr. William E. Hull, the Harry Vaughan Smith Distinguished Visiting Professor of Christianity, will give a series of three lectures on the topic "Best-Selling Christianity: Jesus Christ as Superstar" Feb. 8-9 on Mercer University's Macon Campus. His first lecture, "The Da Vinci Code: Dan Brown on Women in the Life of Jesus," will be at 10:50 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 8. He will speak on "Beyond Belief: Dan Brown on Jesus Outside the New Testament" at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 8. His final presentation is entitled "The Passion of the Christ: Mel Gibson on the Death of Jesus" at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 9.  All lectures will be held in Newton Chapel and are free and open to the public.  Macon-Georgia Poet Laureate David Bottoms is serving as the Ferrol A. Sams Jr. Distinguished Chair in English at Mercer University through early March. A 1971 graduate of Mercer's College of Liberal Arts, Bottoms is teaching a creative writing course on Mercer's Macon campus. While in residence at Mercer, Bottoms will give two free public readings of his work. He will present "Waltzing through the Endtime: New Poems" on Thursday, Jan. 27, at 7 p.m. in Newton Chapel on Mercer's Macon campus. He will give another poetry reading entitled "Armored Hearts: Selected Poems" on Thursday, Feb. 24, at 7 p.m. in Newton Chapel on Mercer's Macon campus.  In addition, the novelist and poet will give a free public lecture "What the Graveyard Says: A Thought on the Consequence of Place" on Thursday, Feb. 17, at 7 p.m. in Newton Chapel. In this lecture, he will discuss how Macon has influenced his writing. Much of his work is set in Macon, including one of his novels, Easter Weekend....
                Judge William Augustus Bootle -- Mercer alumnus, former Law School Dean and professor, and a Lifetime Trustee -- died at his home in Macon early today.
MACON - The Council on Accreditation for Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs recently accredited a nurse anesthetist program developed by Mercer University's School of Medicine and The Medical Center of Central Georgia. The two institutions teamed up to address the severe shortage of Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) throughout the country.
