MACON - The Council on Accreditation for Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs recently accredited a nurse anesthetist program developed by Mercer University's School of Medicine and The Medical Center of Central Georgia. The two institutions teamed up to address the severe shortage of Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) throughout the country.
WHO: Bibb County third graders through 12th graders   WHAT: Students will display their science fair projects and compete for awards.   WHEN: Saturday, Jan. 22. A public viewing will take place from 9 to 10 a.m. An awards ceremony will follow at 10 a.m.   WHERE: Mercer University Center Concourse on the Macon Campus   BACKGROUND: Winners from this fair will go on to compete at a Regional Science Fair Feb. 4.   Mercer faculty will help judge the projects.

ATLANTA - Certified financial planner Mike Kavanagh, host of WSB's "Money Matters," will speak about retirement and financial planning for women at Mercer University's Georgia Baptist College of Nursing on the Cecil B. Day Campus, 3001 Mercer University Dr., in Atlanta on Jan. 31 at 7 p.m. in Room 304. Although the event is free and open to the public, seating is limited and interested participants must reserve a seat.
            ATLANTA - Nationally renowned preacher and teacher the Rev. Joanna M. Adams, pastor of Morningside Presbyterian Church in Atlanta, will present the William L. Self Preaching Lectures, Feb. 21-23, at the McAfee School of Theology of Mercer University. The lectures will be held on Mercer's Cecil B. Day Campus, 3001 Mercer University Drive, Atlanta. Conference registration is $65.
MACON - Macon pediatrician Dr. John Paul Jones, a former Mercer University Trustee member and preceptor for the School of Medicine, recently won the prestigious Denmark Lifetime Achievement Award from the Georgia Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He was also recently named Physician of the Year for 2004 by the Bibb County Medical Society.
MACON- Mercer University will hold its annual Homecoming Parade on Saturday, Jan. 29 at 2 p.m. The Mardi-Gras themed parade will feature floats from campus organizations and the local community. The parade will begin at the Walter F. George School of Law atop Coleman Hill. It will continue to Georgia Avenue, then to College Street and wrap around the outskirts of the University's main Macon campus ending at Porter Track, off Stadium Drive. The parade will feature approximately 16 floats designed by Mercer students, an ROTC Hummer, fire trucks and the Mercer Homecoming Court. Dr. Kedrick Hartfield, assistant professor of mathematics in Mercer's College of Liberal Arts, will serve as grand marshal. Prime spots to catch a good view of the parade include Tattnall Square Park and the sidewalks along College Street between Forsyth Street and Coleman Avenue. ###
Macon-A student-professor team from Mercer University's College of Liberal Arts have built a highly sophisticated computer cluster that performs advanced scientific calculations at rates sometimes exceeding 8.5 billion calculations per second. Supercomputers with the type of power the computer cluster the two have created can easily exceed $1 million in cost. Andrew Pounds, associate professor of computer science estimates that this project cost about $50,000. Pounds designed and constructed the "Olympus Cluster," with the help of Bennie Coleman, a computer science and information technology major at Mercer. It consists of 44 computers that students and faculty traditionally use for common Windows functions on the Macon campus during the day. After the computer lab closes at 6 p.m., the computers are programmed to automatically reboot. When they reboot, the computers are linked to work as one "supercomputer," working together to perform highly advanced scientific calculations....
MACON-Renowned professional communicator Dr. Jean-luc "JL" Doumont will give a free seminar entitled "Making the Most of Your Presentation" at Mercer University's School of Engineering. His presentation will be from 3 to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 18, in room 210 of the Engineering Building on the Macon Campus, just off I-75 and Mercer University Drive. The event is open to the public. A guest of Mercer's Technical Communication Department faculty, Doumont is an engineer with a doctoral degree in applied physics from Stanford University.  He has extensive experience in teaching engineers to write and speak effectively.  The Belgium resident's visit is part of a South American-North American tour of universities and companies throughout January.
