What: Mercer University, the city of Macon and the College Hill Corridor Commission have scheduled a news conference to announce a major new grant for the College Hill Corridor.
MACON - "Music for Haiti," a benefit concert for Haiti relief, will take place Sunday, March 21, at 7:30 p.m. in Newton Chapel on Mercer University's Macon campus. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $5 with a student ID. Tickets can be purchased and additional donations can be made at the door. Proceeds from the concert will go to the organization Haitian Hope to rebuild the St. Marc's Church School in Trouin, Haiti, which collapsed in the recent earthquake. The event will include performances by Robert McDuffie, distinguished university professor and international violinist; David Halen, concertmaster, St. Louis Symphony Orchestra; Elizabeth Pridgen, G. Leslie Fabian Chair of Music at Mercer; Monty Cole, associate professor of music, and the Mercer Jazz ensemble. In addition to the music, there will be spoken word poetry.
KENNESAW - Two Mercer University Press authors won awards in their respective categories at the 46th Annual Georgia Author of the Year Awards, presented by the Georgia Writers Association at a ceremony held at Kennesaw State University Center on June 19. Mercer business and law professor James L. Hunt won the award for creative nonfiction - biography and Philip Lee Williams won the award for fiction.
Macon--Mercer University psychology majors Karen Adkins, Katie Daniel, Tiffany Duffy and Allison Smith recently won the first place award for undergraduate research from the Georgia Psychological Association. The student research team won the award for their research project entitled "The Effects of Temperament and Breed on Perceptions of Adoptability of Shelter Dogs," which they presented at the Georgia Psychological Association meeting in Hilton Head, S.C. in May. Throughout the school year, the student research team researched how one dog's behavior affects the way people perceive other dogs of the same breed and the adoptability of a dog of that breed. Their faculty adviser on the project was Dr. John C. Wright, certified applied animal behaviorist and professor of psychology. Also at the Georgia Psychological Association meeting in May, Samantha Daniel, a spring 2004 graduate of Mercer, won the first place Division of Women Psychologists Award. Perry and Betty Ginn Lecture Series Sept. 18-20 on the University's Atlanta and Macon campuses. This year's lecturer is Adrian Wyard, executive director and founder of the Counterbalance Foundation, websites that provide thousands of links and video focused on the interface between science and religion.  MACON, Ga.- The visiting Lipscomb Bisons combined lethal outside shooting and a strong inside game to down Mercer, 83-66, in Atlantic Sun men's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the University Center.   Shooting woes from the charity stripe also contributed to the Bears' downfall as Mercer (5-15, 4-10 A-Sun) hit only five-of-13 free throws in the opening half and finished the game with a season-low 46.7 percent on 14-of-30 from the line.   "We knew we had to play our best to beat Lipscomb," said Mercer head coach Mark Slonaker.
