LITHIA SPRINGS - Mercer University's Douglas County Regional Academic Center will hold a Fresh Start Career Extravaganza on Saturday, July 30, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The center is located at 975 Blairs Bridge Road. The event is free and open to the public and is sponsored by Mercer's Jesse Mercer Stewards program and the Office of Career Services. Registration is required and should be submitted by Wednesday.

MCDONOUGH - Mercer University's Henry County Regional Academic Center will hold an information session this week for its second summer session as well as the two fall sessions. Adults interested in earning a bachelor's degree through the Center's evening and weekend programs are invited to the free information session at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 27. Academic advisors, professors and admissions counselors will be available to answer questions and discuss programs.
Mercer Madness, the annual kick-off of men's and women's basketball for the upcoming season, will be held this year on Friday, Oct. 13, at the University Center. This year's event, sponsored by QuadWorks and Mercer Athletics, will feature a volleball game with the Bears hosting Savannah State.
The volleyball game will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by a spirit contest competition featuring Mercer Maniacs.
At 8 p.m., the dance team and cheerleaders will lead those in attendance into the promotional activities of Mercer Madness.
The women's basketball team, under the direction of interim head coach Sybil Blalock, will scrimmage at 8:45 p.m. followed by the finals of a women's 3-on-3 competition.
It will be the men's team's turn to scrimmage at 9:15 p.m. Coach Mark Slonaker will begin his 10th season at the helm of the Bears.
The men's 3-on-3 finals will follow at 9:30 p.m.

MACON - Two Mercer graduates will answer the call to serve underprivileged students this summer when they join the highly selective Teach for America program and become teachers. Graduating May 16, Jessica Skinner, of Peachtree City, will teach in Philadelphia and Shalonda Sherman, of Lincolnton, will teach in the Mississippi delta in the fall, following their summer training. Skinner and Sherman join a number of Mercerians in the program, including nine who joined in last year's class. Skinner, a double major in international affairs and political science, was inspired by the organization's mission to take part in its 2008 summer institute as an intern. The daughter of Mark and Lisa Skinner of Peachtree City, Skinner said her internship inspired her to apply for the program. MACON - Mercer University will welcome its largest-ever entering class to the Macon campus on Saturday. The University is expecting more than 650 freshmen and 125 transfer students to begin classes on the Macon campus next week. The University opens its academic year on Monday with its traditional Fall Convocation. Also on Monday evening at 6 p.m., Mercer President William D. Underwood and Lesli Underwood will hold the inaugural Ice Cream with the Underwoods event on Porter Patch to welcome new and returning students to campus.
MACON - Department of Music professor Ian Altman, piano, will present a concert featuring works by Bach, Schumann, Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Chopin and Liszt, as part of the Mercer Music Faculty Artist Series. The recital begins at 7:30 p.m. April 5 in Neva Langley Fickling Hall of the McCorkle Music Building on Mercer's Macon campus. The event is free and open to the public. JACKSONVILE, Fla.- Andrew Brown and Ross Alacqua combined for five points inside the final 36 seconds of overtime as the Mercer men's basketball team opened its final road swing of the season with a 93-90 overtime decision past Jacksonville University Friday night in Atlantic Sun Conference action at Swisher Gymnasium. The Bears struggled to get untracked offensively in the early going, missing shots or committing turnovers in three of its first four possessions, as Jacksonville (1-24, 1-17 A-Sun) sprinted out to an 8-2 lead on the strength of a pair of 3-pointers by seniors Antonio Cool and Aubrey Conerly, sandwiched around a basket by Mario Brown.
Andrew Brown's running jumper in the lane pulled Mercer (8-16, 6-11 A-Sun) back to within one, at 8-7, with 16 minutes remaining in the opening half. His 3-pointer knotted the score at 10 apiece and sophomore Brian Pfohl's post-up bucket gave the Bears their first lead, at 12-10.

ATLANTA - Mercer University's Board of Trustees today approved a $185.4 million operating budget for next year, a $4 million, or 2.3 percent, increase over the current budget. Tuition for Mercer's undergraduate programs will increase by 3.48 percent. Last year's increase for Macon undergraduate programs was 2.9 percent, compared with increases of 6.5 percent in 2008, 6.8 percent in 2007 and 7 percent in 2006. Tuition increases for graduate and professional programs range from 1 percent to 4.4 percent.
