Macon, Ga. -- Mercer University launched its new Web site redesign Dec. 6, unveiling the project at a meeting of its Board of Trustees. The new site features a user-friendly design, a searchable calendar of events and new information about Mercer's four Macon undergraduate schools.
The new design allows visitors to move more easily throughout Mercer's 10,000-page Web site. Through the use of drop-down menus, users can scan many areas of the site without having to click through several pages. A "Spotlight" section on the home page targets news and announcements to Mercer's various audiences, including alumni, students, staff and the local community.
The site continues to offer features included in its earlier version, including online applications for admission, news releases, an e-mail search function and secure online giving.

Macon -- A scientist leading a team of researchers at Mercer University School of Medicine has discovered pluripotent stem cells in adult humans. These adult pluripotent stem cells have an extended life span and can form a variety of cells and tissues from a single cell, attributes similar to embryonic stem cells. His findings may reduce the need for embryonic stem cell use, while advancing medical science in the areas of tissue engineering and gene therapy. He is funded in part by MorphoGen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a San Diego company dedicated to the research and commercialization of adult-derived pluripotent stem cells.
MACON -- President/Chief Executive Officer of the Georgia Lottery Corporation, Rebecca Paul, will wrap-up Mercer University's Executive Forum lineup of fall speakers for the 2001-2002 series. Paul will address the members of the Forum at 7:30 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 29, at the Medical School Auditorium on Mercer's Macon campus.
Mercer University's Woodruff House will be open for free tours between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m., Dec. 4-6. Each room will be trimmed for Christmas by local businesses and decorators, such as J.C. Penney Co.; C. Terry Holland, Interiors; Carol's Linens; Foxglove Cottage and Ocmulgee Arts. Visitors will enjoy refreshments, live music and storytelling.
Macon -- More than 300 students from 35 public and private high schools in Georgia competed in the Mercer University High School Math Competition held Nov. 10 in Macon.
Two Mercer University programming teams placed third and fourth at the Southeastern Small College Programming Contest in Nashville, Tenn. The two teams correctly coded computer programming solutions to four problems, including one problem that required the team to write a software program for electrical routing. Mercer was the only school to have two teams finish in the top 10.
To increase awareness of ankylosing spondylitis, Californian Rob Williams is traveling across the country by bike, stopping at medical schools along the way to deliver a message about the disease. He will be in Macon on Wednesday, Nov. 7, to speak to Mercer University medical students, Mercer/Medical Center of Central Georgia residents, local physicians and other health care workers beginning at 2 p.m. in the Ebersole Auditorium at the Medical Center of Central Georgia.
Macon -- Dr. Melinda K. Dalgarn has been named vice president for student affairs at Mercer University. Dalgarn is currently associate dean of student affairs at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., where she has served for more than 20 years. She will join the university administration on Nov. 1.
