MACON, Ga.- Mercer plays host to Stetson in the renewal of the oldest rivalry in school history on Homecoming weekend for the Bears Tip-off Friday night will be 7:30 p.m. in the University Center. Game Notes (pdf)   In a setting very similar to last season's meeting in Macon, the game has again been chosen as the A-Sun/CSS Game of the Week and, once again, both teams are battling for a spot in the Atlantic Sun Conference post-season tournament.     The Bears claimed an 82-81 overtime victory earlier this season in DeLand. Junior guard Ross Alacqua came off the bench to lead the Bears with 18 points, hitting four three-pointers and going a perfect six-of-six from the line. Forward Will Emerson notched his fourth double-double of the season as he poured in 14 points to go along with 14 boards.  Mercer (6-15, 5-10 A-Sun) has won four straight and six of the last seven contests with the Hatters and swept last season's regular-season...
MACON, Ga. - After dropping two straight on the road, the Mercer women's basketball team returns to the friendly confines of the University Center to face Stetson Friday.  Game Notes (pdf)   The Bears (10-9, 7-5 A-Sun) are undefeated at home in conference play this season, building a 6-0 mark with upsets of Belmont and East Tennessee State.  Despite their successes this season, February has been traditionally a tough stretch for the Bears under Brenda Welch-Nichols.  Mercer is 24-11 (.686) in January under Nichols, but just 11-16 (.407) in February, including two road losses last weekend.   The Hatters (5-15, 3-10 A-Sun) have been up and down all season, failing to put together anything more than a two-game winning streak. Stetson is 0-12 on the road this season, including a 0-7 mark against conference opponents.   Preseason Atlantic Sun Player of the Year Nefertiti Walker is the motor that makes the Hatters go, leading the team and...

MACON, Ga.- The Mercer men's basketball team rallied from an 11-point deficit but fell just short as Stetson held on for a 73-72 victory in Atlantic Sun Conference action Friday night at the University Center.   The Bears had an opportunity to pull out their second straight last-second win when Stetson's Kris Thomas missed two free throws with 6.7 seconds remaining and Mercer's Andrew Brown grabbed the rebound and raced toward the Bears' offensive end of the court. But Brown slipped, losing control of the basketball as he neared midcourt and time expired as players from both teams scrambled for the loose ball.   The Hatters' E.J. Gordon hit a layup with 1:16 remaining giving Stetson (7-17, 6-9 A-Sun) a 73-69 lead, but Brown answered with his second 3-pointer of the night, pulling the Bears to within one with just 49 seconds left in the contest.   In a first half that featured four ties and 10 lead changes, the Hatters used a 5-0 run to pull away from a...
MACON, Ga. - After seeing a halftime lead quickly gobbled up in the second half, a shooting surge led the Mercer women's basketball team to a 60-55 victory over Stetson on Homecoming night. The win also gives the Bears their first sweep over the Hatters since the 1998-99 season.   Stetson (5-16, 3-11 A-Sun) jumped out to an early lead, as Nefertiti Walker scored eight of the Hatters' first 13 points. Mercer slowly responded with a jumper and trey from Courtney Hall, cutting the lead down to four midway through the first half. The teams battled back and forth heading into halftime, but Mercer (11-9, 8-5 A-Sun) methodically built a 27-23 lead at the break behind a pair of jumpers from Megan Lewis.   The Hatters opened the second half on fire, going on an 18-4 run. Walker hit a pair of treys, while Janene Maclin worked the post for five points during the run. Trailing by 10, the Bears woke up from their slumber and pounded the...
MACON, Ga.- The Mercer men's basketball team steps out of conference play for the final time this season as the Bears visit Savannah State Monday night. Tip off is at 7 p.m. at Tiger Arena.   Mercer (6-16, 5-11 A-Sun) is coming off a one-point loss to Stetson Friday night. The Bears are looking to gain momentum for the Atlantic Sun postseason tournament that begins in less than three weeks.   "It's always tough to step out of conference and play on the road during the conference race," said Mercer head coach Mark Slonaker. "It'll be a challenge to play a much-improved Savannah State team. They are tough on their home court."   The contest marks the Bears' sixth game in 12 days. Mercer is coming off a disappointing four-game homestand that saw the Bears drop three-of-four conference games.   Junior guard Javon Randolph paces the Savannah State attack, averaging 16.8 points per game. The Gainesville, Ga., native was named the Division I men's...
SAVANNAH, Ga.- The Mercer men's basketball team placed three players in double figures en route to downing Savannah State, 77-60, in non-conference action Monday night.   After a game delay of approximately 10 minutes because of a power outage, then a further problem with the shot clock, the Bears took an early 3-2 lead on guard Ross Alacqua's 3-pointer from the left wing. A basket and free throw by Tigers' leading scorer Javon Randolph gave Savannah State a brief 5-3 lead. However, Mercer (7-16) ran off 10 straight points to gain a 15-5 lead, forcing SSU coach Horace Brodnax to call a 30-second timeout at the 15:43 mark. Senior forward Will Emerson led the breakout, scoring seven of the 10 points.   Playing its sixth game in 12 days, Mercer built a 13-point advantage at 23-10 with over 11 minutes remaining in the opening half, but poor shot selection and turnovers plagued the Bears and led to a 10-0 run by the Tigers, as they cut the Mercer lead to...
