MACON/SAVANNAH/COLUMBUS – Mercer University School of Medicine (MUSM) Dean Jean R. Sumner, M.D., recently announced the appointment of Dr. Lisa M. Bauman, M.D., as chair of pathology and clinical sciences education.
Dr. Bauman joined MUSM in March 2020 as professor of pathology after serving as clinical professor of pathology at City University of New York School of Medicine in New York City from 2016-2020.
As a highly experienced general surgical pathologist, Dr. Bauman’s prior positions include executive laboratory medical director and pathology department chair at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana, and Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
She also founded and directed a gastrointestinal pathology laboratory for the largest private gastroenterology practice in Indiana.
While at City University of New York, she created original fundamentals and organ systems pathology content for a new integrated undergraduate medical school curriculum.
She received her medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine and completed residency and fellowship training at the Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine and Indiana University Medical Center.
She is a diplomat of the American Board of Pathology in anatomic and clinical pathology with an added qualification in cytopathology.
Dr. Bauman developed subspecialty expertise in gastrointestinal surgical pathology as a visiting clinician in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
Dr. Bauman’s 20 peer-reviewed research publications focus on endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) guided fine needle aspiration cytology in cancer diagnosis and tumor staging of cancer patients. Her recent scholarship explores innovative ways to present clinically relevant pathology content to enhance laboratory medicine visibility. Her work equips students to integrate their understanding of pathology and laboratory data into successful clinical practice with the added benefit of increased learner engagement.
Her professional society memberships include the Association of Pathology Chairs, Group for Research in Pathology Education, International Association of Medical Science Educators and Georgia Association of Pathology.
