Get to know Mercer University‘s faculty members a little better through our “Faculty Flashback” series. Some of our professors will be sharing personal and professional details of their lives in a Q&A as well as then-and-now photos from today and their college days.

Dr. Steve Brown, associate dean of student services, has worked at Mercer since August 1991. He earned a bachelor’s degree in management at North Georgia College, a master’s degree in college student personnel at Northwestern State University and an Ed.D. in counseling and higher education at the University of Georgia.

1. What advice, related to life or college, would you offer students at Mercer now?
Connect with Mercer in as many ways possible. Try new things that you might only participate in once but will add to the richness of your total experience.

2. What is something you wish you knew in college that you know now?
The true value of the relationship between learning and becoming. I wasn’t to the point that I could totally understand how my classroom experiences and co-curricular experiences could contribute to my overall development.

3. What made you want to join the team at Mercer?
A strong sense of community, vision and tradition. I identified with the smaller campus size and the closeness among the faculty, staff and students.

4. What do you love most about your work?
Being involved in a student’s self-discovery process. Realizing that I am so fortunate to be a part of that process in some small way.

5. What are some of the projects/accomplishments you’ve been most proud of in your career so far?
I’ve enjoyed observing Mercer evolve and grow for almost 30 years. I’ve been able to serve in a variety of positions in Student Affairs that have challenged me to better understand myself and others.

6. What’s your favorite spot on campus?
The R. Kirby Godsey Administration Building. It’s amazing how everything was contained in that one building for a time. It’s a testament of time and heritage. Plus, the tower view is awesome.

7. What are some of your hobbies and interests outside of work?
My wife and I enjoy hiking, biking and kayaking. We like to travel, especially to New York City, to visit with our two sons.
