Two Mercer University professors will attend the Republican and Democratic National Conventions in the coming days. David Gushee, Ph.D., Distinguished University Professor of Christian Ethics, will be a panelist for a discussion on faith at the Democratic National Convention on Thursday in Denver, Colo. Gregory Domin, Ph.D., an associate professor of political science, is leading a group of students in a seminar course during the Republican National Convention in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minn., from Aug. 24-Sept. 5.
Dr. Gushee, who is also president of the group Evangelicals for Human Rights, will be participating in the “Moral Values Issues Abroad” panel discussion as part of the Democratic National Convention’s first-ever “Faith Caucus,” which draws the national leaders from a range of denominations during the convention to address some of the pressing faith issues facing the presidential candidates.
The panel discussion will take place at 12 p.m., Mountain Time, in the Colorado Convention Center and will include a prominent group of panelists in addition to Dr. Gushee: lawyer Preeta Bansal, a member and past chair of the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom; Sister Simone Campbell, national coordinator of NETWORK, a Catholic leader in the global movement for justice and peace, and Claude d’Estree, an anti-human trafficking advocate and the director of the Center for Rights Development and chair of the Task Force on Modern Slavery & Human Trafficking.
Dr. Domin will spend more than a week working with a group of students from around the country at the Republican National Convention through a program with The Washington Center for Internships and Seminars. The Campaign 2008 program gives college students from around the country the opportunity to study under professors from prestigious universities at either the Democrat or Republican national conventions. Students earn academic credit for attending the conventions and their associated seminars.
Dr. Domin plans to lead a group of Mercer University students through the program in 2012.
