MACON — The Princeton Review ranked Mercer University No. 8 among schools in its The Best 377 Colleges guidebook for the level of participation in intramural sports. For the ninth consecutive year, Mercer was named to the prestigious guidebook in the 2013 edition. The Review does not rank the 377 schools, but does add top 10 lists for certain categories based on student surveys. Mercer placed in the “Everyone Plays Intramural Sports.” Only about 15 percent of the four-year colleges in America and two Canadian colleges were chosen for the book, which goes on sale today.
“We commend Mercer for its outstanding academics, which is the primary criteria for our choice of schools for the book,” said Robert Franek, The Princeton Review’s vice president of publishing and author of the book. “Our choices are based on institutional data we collect about schools, our visits to schools over the years, feedback we gather from students attending the schools and the opinions of our staff and our 28-member National College Counselor Advisory Board. We also work to keep a wide representation of colleges in the book by region, size, selectivity and character.”
In its two-page profile on Mercer, The Princeton Review commends Mercer’s strong academics and faculty. The profile goes on to quote extensively from Mercer students whom The Princeton Review surveyed for the book. Among the comments is high praise for faculty at Mercer who will “devote extra time if needed for those who need it.” Students also praised the diversity of academics, saying: “the number of opportunities available to enhance the student’s academic experience is excellent” and “Mercer is a place that respects its students and knows the enormous potential its students have.”
In a “Survey Says…” sidebar in the book’s profile on Mercer, The Princeton Review lists topics that Mercer students surveyed for the book were most in agreement about. The list includes: “low cost of living,” “very little drug use” and “athletic facilities are great.”
