Mercer University will host this year’s nationally televised FCS Kickoff, marking the first time in a decade that the game has been played outside Montgomery, Alabama. The matchup between the Bears and the East Texas A&M Lions will take place at 7 p.m. Aug. 29 in Five Star Stadium. Here are four things to know before you go.
Taylor debuts as head coach

Joel Taylor will make his debut as Mercer’s head coach against East Texas A&M after having previously served as defensive coordinator for the Bears from 2020-23. Taylor led West Georgia to 12 wins across the Wolves’ first two seasons at the NCAA Division I level in 2024 and 2025 before being named Mercer’s 22nd head coach on Dec. 11, 2025.
Free concerts return to Black Field

Pre-game festivities start at 11 a.m. on Black Field, culminating at 5 p.m. with a performance by Nashville songwriter Conner Smith as part of the free Ford Football Concert Series. The music starts at 4 p.m. as rising country music superstar Micah Fletcher warms up the crowd as the opener. Leading up to the show, fans can enjoy the Fall Line beer garden and kid zone with inflatables. At 4:45 p.m., join us for the Bear Walk as the football team, band and cheerleaders make their way to Five Star Stadium. Gates open at 6 p.m.
It’s Teacher Appreciation Night

Mercer is celebrating teachers this game day. The first 100 teachers will receive a commemorative T-shirt, plus entry into the grand prize raffle.
Mercer implements clear bag policy

For the safety of all guests and to help speed up entry, Five Star Stadium now has a clear bag and guest screening policy in effect for all events. Please review the approved bag guidelines and prohibited items before you arrive.
