MACON - Mercer University's Dr. Michael S. Leonard, senior associate dean of the School of Engineering and professor of industrial engineering, was recently recognized as one of four new ABET Fellows. ABET recognizes a few fellows each year for sustained quality service to the ABET-related professions and to education within the ABET disciplines, particularly through ABET activities. Dr. Leonard was inducted at the 2011 ABET Annual Awards Banquet in Baltimore, Md. ABET is the international organization that accredits applied science, computing, engineering and technology programs in the United States and abroad, including the computer science and engineering bachelor's programs at Mercer. Dr. Leonard's seven years at Mercer include a year of service as interim dean of the School of Engineering. The holidays have arrived at Mercer, ushered in by "A Grand Mercer Christmas" concert event Tuesday night that showcased an array of Townsend School of Music faculty and students. The program of classics, carols and newly commissioned works was performed at The Grand Opera House to a capacity audience that joined in singing the opening and closing songs. The 2012 edition of the annual concert will be recorded for national broadcast on PBS stations in 2013. ATLANTA/MACON/SAVANNAH - For the fifth straight year Mercer University has enrolled a record number of students. The University-wide student population is up 1.2 percent to 8,336 students. This also marks the third year in a row the University's enrollment has been more than 8,000 students.
Atlanta's Mary P. Mann, a 2009 graduate of Mercer University's Georgia Baptist College of Nursing, was awarded the 2011 New Member Pillar Award by the Sigma Theta Tau International, a nursing honor society. She received the award at the society's 41st Biennial Convention in Grapevine, Texas, which took place Oct. 29-Nov. 3.
MACON - Mercer University broke ground and unveiled plans for its new football and lacrosse complex during a Homecoming weekend ceremony following today's Board of Trustees meeting.Several hundred faculty, staff, students, trustees and community members were on hand for the ceremonial groundbreaking, which was held adjacent to the construction site. Excavation work began about six weeks ago, and the facility is expected to be completed early next fall, in time to accommodate practices for Mercer's first class of football recruits.The Board of Trustees last November unanimously approved the University's return to competition in intercollegiate football in 2013, ending a 70-year hiatus for the sport at Mercer. The first intercollegiate football game played in the state was between Mercer and the University of Georgia in 1892. Dr. Wallace Daniel, provost since 2008, announced today his decision to return to the faculty at the end of the year. President William D. Underwood announced that Dr. Daniel will be succeeded as provost by Dr. D. Scott Davis, senior vice provost for research and dean of graduate studies, effective Jan. 1, 2012.

MACON - The tradition of a fall Homecoming at Mercer University rolls into its fourth year featuring an even more action-packed lineup for Homecoming 2011, this Friday and Saturday.
