Mercer University students played a small but important role in connecting with "at risk" children, many of whom were at a critical juncture in their lives, during their recent three-week Mercer On Mission experience in Brazil. Nine students and two faculty members participated in the program.
ATLANTA - James W. Bartling, Pharm.D., associate dean of student affairs and admissions in Mercer University's College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, is the 2009 recipient of the prestigious Bowl of Hygeia, an award presented annually by the Georgia Pharmacy Association. The award was presented at GPhA's 2009 annual convention, held recently in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
ATLANTA - Two Mercer University pharmacy students have been awarded pre-doctoral fellowships from the American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education. Both students are candidates in the dual Doctor of Pharmacy/Ph.D. program. The candidates, Delaram Moshkelani, of Duluth, and Rebecca L. Neal, of Marietta, will each receive stipends to continue their studies at Mercer's College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.
MACON, Ga. -- Mercer University undergraduate students from the College of Liberal Arts and the College of Nursing recently returned from a 20-day visit to Thailand as part of Mercer on Mission (MOM) '09. The purpose of the program is to transform students' lives through academic study and hands-on service learning in international settings. Mercer on Mission '09 Thailand focused the majority of its service in Northern Thailand supporting efforts to provide education and health care to the hill tribe minority peoples in the cities of Lampang and ChiangMai.
The Macon Area Habitat for Humanity will dedicate the 2009 Mercer University Build home on Wednesday, July 15, at noon. The home is located at 4160 Marion Ave. in Lynwood Estates is now owned by the Baldwin family. The Mercer University Build home is the result of a partnership between Mercer University and Mercer's Habitat Student Chapter. The University and the chapter contributed volunteer work as well as money to help build the home.
ATLANTA - Lindsay Watters, a second-year physician assistant student at Mercer University's College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, was recently elected as the junior director of external affairs for the Student Academy of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, the national organization for physician assistants. Watters' election marks the first national office for a student in the program, which began less than two years ago.
McDONOUGH/LITHIA SPRINGS - Beginning in August, Mercer University's College of Continuing and Professional Studies will offer a new undergraduate major, human resources administration and development, at the Henry County and Douglas County Regional Academic Centers. The program will be offered in a flexible evening and weekend format that also includes hybrid online and face-to-face courses.
MACON - Campus Compact, a national coalition committed to fulfilling the civic purposes of higher education, has selected Mercer University Senior Vice Provost Dr. Peter C. Brown as a finalist for the Thomas Ehrlich Civically Engaged Faculty Award. Dr. Brown, who is also a professor of philosophy and interdisciplinary studies in the College of Liberal Arts, is one of only seven finalists from a group of 53 distinguished nominees for this national award.
