MACON - Mercer University's School of Engineering begins its celebration of National Engineers Week a day early with a leadership conference today. The School will celebrate with several events throughout the remainder of the week on the Macon campus, concluding with a MathCounts competition for area middle school teams on Feb. 26. There will also be a lecture by the head of Georgians for Passenger Rail on Monday and a lecture by Mercer alumna Audrey Norvell on Friday.
ATLANTA--The James and Carolyn McAfee School of Theology of Mercer University is accepting applications for its new Doctor of Ministry Degree Program. The first three-week seminar of the doctoral program is scheduled for July 6-26. The School will initially accept 15 students each year. A great deal of research has gone into developing McAfee's Doctor of Ministry Degree Program. In 2001, Dean Alan Culpepper asked McAfee faculty member Dr. Ron Johnson to use his sabbatical at Princeton University to research other doctor of ministry programs and determine the essential components needed to develop one at McAfee. "I studied literally dozens of programs across the country," said Johnson, associate dean of the Doctor of Ministry Degree Program. MACON, Ga. - Chpryelle "CeCe" Carr, daughter of Malvin and Shirley Carr of Lawrenceville, Ga., is one of two students to receive the highest honor Mercer University bestows on a graduating student: the Griffin B. Bell Award for Community Service. She was presented a crystal Steuben sculpture during the May 5 commencement of the Mercer University School of Medicine, where she received the doctor of medicine degree.Named in honor of Mercer alumnus and former United States Attorney General Griffin B. Bell, the award recognizes students who have exemplified the true meaning of community service during their studies, improving the lives of others through their dedication and commitment. ATLANTA/MACON - Mercer University will hold the first three of its 10 commencement ceremonies this Saturday. The health schools will graduate their students in separate ceremonies on their respective campuses in Atlanta and Macon. The remaining seven ceremonies will take place over the next two Saturdays.
MACON - Henry E. Young, Ph.D., was presented the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Faculty Humanism in Medicine Award from Mercer University School of Medicine during commencement May 7 in Macon. Young - the first non-physician to ever receive the award in the School's history - was chosen by the Class of 2005 for his empathetic, sensitive and respective behavior in providing patient care.
Mercer University's National Collegiate Wrestling Association team left Friday for the NCWA Southeastern Conference championship in Gainesville, Fla.   Mercer has three of six wrestlers ranked in their respected weight classes, with Richard Sexton ranked second in his weight class (197 lbs). Competing against 21 other colleges and universities in the southeast, Mercer wrestlers hope to qualify for the NCWA national competition in Grand Rapids, Mich.    The University of Central Florida and Pensacola Christian College are both two-time national champions and bring tough competition to the southeast conference. Among other teams competing include the University of Georgia, Auburn, University of Alabama and University of Florida.

Stetson School of Business and Economics was quoted Thursday in The Financial Times, one of the world's most important business and financial newspapers. MACON, GA -- The Mercer Singers, conducted by Dr. Stanley Roberts, will present their Bon Voyage concert at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 17, at First Baptist Church in Macon before embarking on a two-week tour of Eastern Europe the next day. During the tour the choir will perform eight concerts in Germany, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary, including the Dom (Brandenburg), Nikolaikirche (Potsdam), Corpus Christi Church (Wroclaw), and St Catherine's Church (Krakow & Kremnica). The Mercer Singers' final concert will be performed in the magnificent and historic Matthias Church of Budapest. The a cappella program will feature works by composers ranging from the Renaissance period to our time, including a large selection of spirituals and folksongs. The Bon Voyage concert is open to the public at First Baptist Church, 511 High Place, Macon. Roberts is an associate professor of music, director of choral activities and coordinator of sacred music studies at Mercer University.
 SAVANNAH, Ga.- The Mercer men's basketball team placed three players in double figures en route to downing Savannah State, 77-60, in non-conference action Monday night.   After a game delay of approximately 10 minutes because of a power outage, then a further problem with the shot clock, the Bears took an early 3-2 lead on guard Ross Alacqua's 3-pointer from the left wing. A basket and free throw by Tigers' leading scorer Javon Randolph gave Savannah State a brief 5-3 lead. However, Mercer (7-16) ran off 10 straight points to gain a 15-5 lead, forcing SSU coach Horace Brodnax to call a 30-second timeout at the 15:43 mark.
