ATLANTA - The College of Continuing and Professional Studies of Mercer University will hold a free information session on its new Master of Science in Public Safety Leadership program from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 22, on the University's Atlanta campus. The event will be held in Room 213 of the Davis Building, 3001 Mercer University Dr., off I-85 just inside the northeast perimeter. Professors, administrators, and admissions and financial aid counselors will be available to talk with attendees.

MACON, Ga. - Mercer University awarded an honorary Doctor of Music degree to Mr. Chuck Leavell, keyboardist for the Rolling Stones and forest conservationist, at the main Macon commencement on May 13. Mercer University President R. Kirby Godsey made the presentation after Leavell performed "Georgia on My Mind" for the more than 3,000 people at the University Center. The commencement ceremony was held for the more than 450 graduates of the College of Liberal Arts, Eugene W. Stetson School of Business and Economics, School of Engineering and Tift College of Education, as well as their families.
MACON, Ga. - Mercer University honored music pioneer Philip Michael Walden, a 1962 graduate, with an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree, less than a month after he succumbed to cancer. Walden's son, Philip Walden Jr., accepted the honor from Mercer President and CEO R. Kirby Godsey during commencement on May 13.
ATLANTA - Beginning on July 20 Mercer University will offer a preparation course for the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). A program of Mercer's College of Continuing and Professional Studies, the course will be offered on Mercer's Cecil B. Day Campus in Atlanta on Thursdays from 5:30 - 9:30 p.m. between July 20 and Aug. 31.
A new hymnal for Baptists and other Christian fellowships is slated for release in 2009, the year that marks the 400th anniversary of Baptists. The Townsend-McAfee Institute Graduate Studies in Church Music at Mercer University is leading efforts to organize, research and collect songs of worship for the hymnal. The project is true to Mercer's commitment of extending its resources to Baptists and other Christians and in keeping with the hymnic tradition set forth by the University's namesake, Jesse Mercer, with his Cluster of Spiritual Songs, which was first published around 1800, before passing through 11 editions.

MACON, Ga. - The Georgia Department of Community Health's State Office of Rural Health (SORH) announces that William F. Bina, M.D., M.P.H., chair of the Department of Community Medicine at Mercer University School of Medicine, has been named to the Rural Health Advisory Board. Bina was selected because of his visible dedication and commitment to improving the quality of life for the citizens of rural and underserved areas of Georgia.
