ATLANTA — Dr. Raquibul Hasan, associate professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Mercer University College of Pharmacy, has been elected a Fellow of the American Heart Association. The designation recognizes sustained contributions to cardiovascular research, professional achievement and service to the field.

Dr. Hasan holds a tenured appointment at Mercer with a joint role in the School of Medicine. He leads a research program focused on hypertension, vascular dysfunction and cardiometabolic diseases. His laboratory integrates computational drug discovery with molecular and cellular pharmacology, vascular physiology and in vivo disease models to address critical gaps in cardiovascular care.

“Dr. Hasan’s designation as a Fellow of the American Heart Association reflects the depth and impact of his contributions to cardiovascular science,” said Dr. Michael Crouch, dean of the College of Pharmacy. “His innovative research and dedication to mentoring the next generation of scientists exemplify Mercer University’s mission and values. We are proud to see his work recognized nationally.”

His work centers on vascular biology, G protein-coupled receptor signaling, ion channel physiology and endothelin biology. He studies mechanisms that regulate arterial function and blood pressure, including the effects of statins, endothelin signaling pathways and gut-derived metabolites. His research advances understanding of drug-resistant hypertension and its links to vascular inflammation, metabolic disease and cognitive decline.

“I am honored to be elected a Fellow of the American Heart Association — a professional organization I hold especially close to my heart,” said Dr. Hasan. “This recognition reflects the collective effort of my students, collaborators and mentors who share a commitment to advancing cardiovascular science.”

Dr. Hasan maintains continuous external funding from federal and foundation sources. His current awards include a $2.98 million grant from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute to study how statins may also reduce blood pressure, a $77,000 American Heart Association grant to advance new approaches for drug-resistant hypertension, and a $300,000 American Heart Association Second Century Early Faculty Independence Award supporting research on vascular effects of statins.

He has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed publications and regularly presents his findings at national and international scientific meetings. His work appears in leading journals across pharmacology, physiology and cardiovascular science and has influenced current approaches to blood pressure regulation and vascular therapeutics.

Dr. Hasan has received multiple honors for research, teaching and mentorship. He also contributes significant service to the scientific community. He reviews grants and fellowships for the American Heart Association and the National Institutes of Health and participates in scientific review panels and trainee competitions. In addition, he holds leadership roles in professional societies that support cardiovascular and physiological research.

He has trained nearly 60 students and fellows across undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral levels. Many of his trainees have earned national awards and advanced to competitive positions in academia, industry and healthcare.

Election as a Fellow of the American Heart Association recognizes Dr. Hasan’s scientific impact and leadership in advancing cardiovascular health and research.
