Mercer to Celebrate Family Weekend 2016 Sept. 16-18 in Macon

MACON – Mercer University's Office of Campus Life and Student Involvement has organized three days of events Sept. 16-18 to celebrate Family Weekend 2016.

Students' parents, siblings and other relatives are invited to meet Mercer's administration and faculty and enjoy a variety of arts, athletic and social events.

Registration can be completed online by Sept. 15 or on site Sept. 16, 5-7 p.m., or Sept. 17, 8-10:30 a.m., in the Connell Student Center Lobby. The $10 fee per family includes breakfast, tailgating activities, a discount card and the opportunity to purchase Family Weekend T-shirts for $10 each.

The festivities will begin Friday evening with the National Pan-Hellenic Council Stroll-Off on the University Center patio at 7 p.m., followed by an outdoor showing of “Finding Dory” on Cruz Plaza at 9 p.m.

The University's administration and faculty will join students and their families for breakfast in Connell Student Center from 8-10 a.m. on Saturday.

The bursar's, registrar's and student financial planning offices will be open from 9:30-10:30 a.m. to provide services or answer questions.

Mercer President William D. Underwood will lead a welcome program at 10:45 a.m. in Willingham Auditorium.

Tailgating activities for the whole family will take place on Cruz Plaza from 12-4 p.m. Barbecue lunch plates can be purchased for $7 each, and there will be a free photo booth, popsicle stand and football on the big screen.

A workshop on “Study Abroad Opportunities” will take place in Connell Conference Room 1 from 1:30-2:15 p.m., followed by a session on “Internship Opportunities” in the Science and Engineering Building's Peyton Anderson Auditorium from 2:15-3 p.m.

The Mercer Singers will present their Family Weekend Gala Concert at 2 p.m. in Fickling Hall. Also, at 2 p.m., the University will hold a ribbon-cutting outside the new Legacy Hall freshman residence hall, which will be followed by an open house.

The Bears football team will play host to Tennessee Tech at 4 p.m. in Five Star Stadium. Additional athletic events during the weekend include volleyball matches in Hawkins Arena at 2:30 and 7 p.m. on Friday and 12 p.m. on Saturday, as well as men's soccer on Bear Field at 8 p.m. on Saturday.

Tower tours of the Godsey Administration Building will be available from 8:30-10:30 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. on Saturday. Family food specials will be available all weekend in Mercer Village and downtown Macon, and the campus bookstore will have extended hours until 6:30 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday.

Family Weekend will conclude with a worship service at Centenary United Methodist Church on Sunday at 11 a.m.
