MACON, Ga. — Mercer University senior Abriana Nyante was recently selected as the Georgia Society of Professional Engineers (GSPE) Student of the Year.
The GSPE Engineer of the Year Awards aim to honor outstanding professional engineers and students who have made significant contributions to the engineering profession and their communities in Georgia.
A civil engineering major from Lawrenceville, Nyante said she is honored and grateful to her parents, friends, colleagues and professors for supporting her throughout my college career.
“Every person whom I’ve had the chance to interact with here at Mercer has played a role in me receiving this award, for that I am eternally grateful.”
Associate Professor of Civil Engineering Dr. Natalia Cardelino nominated Nyante for the award. In her letter of recommendation for the honor, she wrote, “Abriana has all the qualities that will make her an exceptional civil engineer. Not only is Abriana strong academically, but she excels as a leader among her peers and has a strong passion for using engineering to help others.”
Assistant Professor of Environmental and Civil Engineering Dr. Eazaz Sadeghvaziri said Nyante stands out not only for her academic excellence, but also for her professionalism, responsibility and character.
“Abriana represents the very best of our engineering students,” he said. “I am certain she has an exceptionally bright future ahead and will continue to make a meaningful and positive impact in the engineering profession and the communities she serves.”
At Mercer, Nyante is president of the American Society of Civil Engineers chapter and a member of Tau Beta Pi, the Engineering Honor Society. She was awarded the Gilman Scholarship her sophomore year (2023-2024) to travel to the Dominican Republic for a Mercer On Mission trip. After graduation, Nyante will work as a civil analyst for Kimley-Horn’s Water/Wastewater team in Chamblee.
Nyante will be presented with the Student of the Year award during the American Council of Engineering Companies Engineering Excellence Awards program on March 6 in Duluth.
