The new season at The Grand Opera House, Mercer's premier performing arts center, begins with a trio of diverse music events. The Royal Drummers and Dancers of Burundi inspired the World Music and Dance Festival and have toured internationally for more than five decades, bringing the dance, music and culture of their Central African homeland to life, thrilling audiences of all ages. They take the historic stage at The Grand for the inaugural event of the season on Tuesday, Sept. 18, at 7:30 p.m.
Distinguished Mercer University alumnus, trustee and respected attorney Frank C. Jones died Aug. 29 in Macon at the age of 87. Serving his first term on the Mercer Board of Trustees at the time of his death, Jones was a 1950 graduate of the Walter F. George School of Law, coming to Mercer after earning his bachelor's degree at Emory University in 1947. He served as editor in chief of the Mercer Law Review.
The new season of concerts presented by Townsend School of Music includes more than 50 performances by students, distinguished faculty artists, and world-renowned guest artists who span nearly every musical genre. September's concert lineup is illustrative of the musical diversity you may hear throughout the year in performances at Fickling Hall, the signature performance venue at the McCorkle Music Building.
MACON - Mercer Law School will hold two lectures this month. On Sept. 11, noted conflict of laws professor Erin O'Hara O'Connor, Milton R. Underwood Chair in Law at Vanderbilt Law School, will deliver the second Annual Brainerd Currie lecture. Her topic will cover "How Choice of Law Has Killed the Private Attorney General." On Sept. 22, Douglas Laycock, the Robert E. Scott Distinguished Professor of Law at University of Virginia School of Law, will deliver the School's Constitution Day Lecture on "The Constitution and the Culture Wars - With Special Attention to the Religion Clauses." Both events will be held at noon in the Moot Courtroom of the Law School. The events are free and open to the public.
MACON - Mercer Law School recently welcomed its first incoming class in the Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree in Federal Criminal Practice and Procedure, the only program of its kind in the nation. The one-year advanced legal degree program is designed for students interested in careers in federal criminal practice as prosecutors, federal defenders, or private defense counselors. The inaugural class of eight students, composed of both recent law graduates and experienced attorneys from Georgia, Utah, Texas and South Carolina, began the LL.M. program on Aug. 20.The program's curriculum focuses on federal criminal practice in the full range of federal cases from "white collar crime" to narcotics, firearms, immigration and terrorism cases. The program offers extensive skills training to prepare students for all phases of the trial and appellate process, including a clinical field placement for each student. MACON - The Princeton Review ranked Mercer University No. 8 among schools in its The Best 377 Colleges guidebook for the level of participation in intramural sports. For the ninth consecutive year, Mercer was named to the prestigious guidebook in the 2013 edition. The Review does not rank the 377 schools, but does add top 10 lists for certain categories based on student surveys. Mercer placed in the "Everyone Plays Intramural Sports." Only about 15 percent of the four-year colleges in America and two Canadian colleges were chosen for the book, which goes on sale today.
MACON - Mercer University will welcome its largest-ever entering class to the Macon campus on Saturday. The University is expecting more than 650 freshmen and 125 transfer students to begin classes on the Macon campus next week. The University opens its academic year on Monday with its traditional Fall Convocation. Also on Monday evening at 6 p.m., Mercer President William D. Underwood and Lesli Underwood will hold the inaugural Ice Cream with the Underwoods event on Porter Patch to welcome new and returning students to campus.
Mercer's Southern Studies Department held its second National Endowment for the Humanities Institute this summer for 24 selected teachers who traveled from New York, Washington, Hawaii, Kansas, Mississippi, Oklahoma, North Carolina and Alabama. The five-week institute, titled "Cotton Culture in the U.S. South, 1865-1965," was funded by a $185,000 NEH grant, and held June 24 - July 27 on Mercer's Macon campus.
MACON - In preparation for the return of football in the fall of 2013, Mercer University announced Tuesday that season tickets will be available for the first time to the general public beginning on Thursday, August 16. Ticket prices are set at $75 per seat in the "White Section" (between the 35-yard markers) and $50 per seat for the "Orange Sections" (between the end zones and the 35-yard markers) in the west stands. Each $75 or $50 season ticket will provide admission to all eight home games, including Homecoming, in 2013. "This is an exciting time for Mercer Athletics and the Mercer football program," Director of Athletics Jim Cole said. "We are happy to offer this opportunity to the general public and thrilled with the support we have received so far from our alumni and donors."
