MACON - Four Mercer University seniors saw their yearlong effort to develop a plan for a "college town" corridor connecting the University with downtown Macon take a major step forward Friday. Macon Mayor Jack Ellis announced the creation of the College Hill Corridor Commission to implement the students' plan for the development of the corridor, which was part of two service-learning courses at Mercer.
MACON - Mercer University School of Medicine is partnering with Piedmont Healthcare in Atlanta to offer its Master of Family Therapy (MFT) degree program in Atlanta, beginning this fall. Recipients of The Master of Family Therapy degree will be eligible to apply to the state of Georgia for licensure for the independent practice of family therapy.
MACON - The Civic Engagement Colloquium of Mercer University kicks off the first of three presentations on Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. in the Medical School Auditorium. The panel discussion, which is free and open to the public, will focus on Mercer Engaging Community and Health.

The second annual Teaching and Learning with Technology Summer Faculty Institute was held May 12-16 on the Macon campus. Eleven faculty members from schools and colleges across the university were selected for participation in the program which focused on engaging students more actively in learning through integration of the most advanced technology into course experience. Areas of focus for this year's institute included the incorporation of new media into course components in order to deepen student learning and understanding; digital storytelling; use of Web CT to engage students in the learning process; experimental instruction with IPODS; Fair Use; Cognition and Technology; and Assessment of Learning with Technology. The institute is sponsored each year by the Mercer Center for Teaching and Learning and the Office of Provost DuBose. WHAT: Randall Peters, Ph.D., chair of Mercer University's Physics Department, offers a unique angle in the story on the new quest by the United States Navy to shoot down an ailing spy satellite before it plunges to earth. Peters was part of team of engineers and scientists that worked on a similar project in 1985, which was part of President Ronald Reagan's Star Wars program. On Sept. 13, 1985, a United States Air Force fighter jet screamed into the sky, releasing a missile tipped with a miniature vehicle, helping to propel that vehicle into the path of an aging solar-monitoring satellite, the collision turned the satellite into debris. The result was the first, and only, successful deployment of anti-satellite technology by the United States. MACON, Ga.--The Mercer University School of Medicine's Department of Community Medicine will sponsor five additional breast health awareness seminars in central Georgia following the success of an initial seminar on June 27. These seminars serve low income women in eight counties of central Georgia.
