MACON - BB&T Corp. has pledged $1 million to Mercer University's Eugene W. Stetson School of Business and Economics to establish a BB&T Distinguished Professorship of Capitalism and the Center for Undergraduate Research in Public Policy and Capitalism and to continue funding the University's Executive Forum Presented by BB&T.
MACON - Veteran journalist and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Hank Klibanoff will speak at Mercer University's Macon campus on Feb. 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the Presidents Dining Room of the University Center. The event is sponsored by Mercer's Southern Studies Program as part of its year-long series of special events, "Remembering the Civil Rights Movement." Klibanoff will speak about his work covering race in the South, in a presentation titled "The Race Beat: Then and Now." The lecture is free and open to the public.
 MACON, Ga. - After seeing its five-game winning streak snapped last weekend, the Mercer women's basketball team shot a season-high 52.9 percent from the field to defeat Atlantic Sun newcomer Kennesaw State, 69-55.   After a slow start, the Bears used a 12-4 run over two-minute streak in the first half to take a 22-11 lead midway through. The Lady Owls trimmed the lead down to five with 7:19 remaining in the half off a Shavonder Clarke jumper, but Tanya Kessenich pushed the Bears' lead back to nine with consecutive layups.   Mercer (9-7, 6-3 A-Sun) continued to dominate the paint in the second half led by Sarah Russell and Kessenich. A new hymnal for Baptists and other Christian fellowships is slated for release in 2009, the year that marks the 400th anniversary of Baptists. The Townsend-McAfee Institute Graduate Studies in Church Music at Mercer University is leading efforts to organize, research and collect songs of worship for the hymnal. The project is true to Mercer's commitment of extending its resources to Baptists and other Christians and in keeping with the hymnic tradition set forth by the University's namesake, Jesse Mercer, with his Cluster of Spiritual Songs, which was first published around 1800, before passing through 11 editions.
MACON - Mercer University will hold a lecture, titled "Our President is Black, Now What? Race Relations and the Obama Presidency," on Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. in the Medical School Auditorium. The program will include two prominent speakers - author and commentator Dr. Johnny Hill and author Jeremy Tate. The event is part of the Mercer Lyceum, a university wide initiative to and is free and open to the public.

  MACON, Ga. - With strong defense and good free throw shooting, the Mercer women's basketball team extended its winning streak to three Thursday night. The Bears defeated Atlantic Sun preseason favorite Lipscomb, 50-46, Thursday night at the University Center.   Lipscomb (3-9, 2-3 A-Sun) opened the game with a 12-2 run over the first 5:32, taking advantage of its size in the post and executed an inside-outside game plan.  Catie Woods hit two 3-pointers and Rachel Viehmann hit a pair of jumpers, while Penny Jones added a pair of free throws.   The Bears (6-6, 3-2 A-Sun) clawed their way into the game and cut the Lady Bisons' lead down to five, 16-11, midway through the first half after TaShera Lewis converted the back end of a classic 3-point play. The team swapped buckets afterwards, but Lipscomb was never able to pull away and Mercer was unable to tie things up.   "With 3:38 left in the first half, I told the players we needed to...
 DELAND, Fla. - Mercer ended the first half of its conference season on a high note by defeating Stetson, 82-81, in overtime at the Edmunds Center on Tuesday night.   The Bears got off to a quick start in DeLand aided by solid defense and strong rebounding. The Hatters scored the first points of the game off of senior Anthony Register's three-point play. The Bears then proceeded to go on a 15-0 run over the next seven minutes, taking a 15-3 lead at the 11-minute mark. Sophomore Shaddean Aaron paced the Mercer run by dropping in five points.   Mercer and Stetson traded spurts for the remainder of the half as the Bears took a 38-28 lead into intermission. The Bears out-rebounded the Hatters 29-18 in the first half.  Mercer shot 42 percent from the floor over the first 20 minutes and held Stetson to a 27 percent clip.   Junior Ross Alacqua paced Mercer in the first half, draining a pair of deep three-pointers en route to 10...
ATLANTA - The first six candidates in the Georgia Baptist College of Nursing's new Ph.D. in nursing program will come to campus for the first time as a group on Thursday and Friday, Aug. 13-14, for a computer training and orientation. The dynamic new program at Mercer University will feature a distance-learning delivery method for much of the coursework, allowing the students to continue in their positions as nurses and nursing educators. The program is only the fourth Ph.D. in nursing to be offered in Georgia, which is facing a critical shortage of nurse educators.
