Thanks to the previous success of an HIV prevention program developed in a rural Georgia school system, Mike Smith, Ph.D., has been tapped by the Indian Health Service (IHS) and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to lead in the development of a similar program for Native American youth in the western U.S. Dr. Smith, Director of AIDS Education and Research at the Mercer School of Medicine, said the original program, called STAND -- Students Together Against Negative Decisions -- was created at the request of medical and educational leaders in a Middle Georgia county following a syphilis outbreak in the early 1990s. Since then, STAND has been implemented in a number of Georgia counties, including Bibb County, in both in-school, after-school and community settings.
ATLANTA/MACON - Mercer University will hold on Saturday, May 6, the first three of its 10 commencement ceremonies. The University's three health schools will graduate their students in separate ceremonies on their respective campuses in Macon and Atlanta. The remaining seven ceremonies will take place over the next two weeks.   The Southern School of Pharmacy will graduate 130 doctor of pharmacy and Ph.D. candidates at 9 a.m. at Mercer's Cecil B. Former Mercer University trustees Nancy Grace and Cathy Callaway Adams were honored as YWCA "Women of Achievement" during a May 19 luncheon in Atlanta.Grace, who earned her undergraduate and law degrees from Mercer, was honored as the organization's 2010 "Woman of Achievement," and Adams, a graduate of Tift College, was named as one of 10 members of the 2010 Academy of Women Achievers. Both women recently completed five-year terms on the Mercer Board of Trustees.For more than 25 years, the YWCA has honored Atlanta's premier female role models through the Academy of Women Achievers. MACON - A Mercer University School of Medicine faculty member is on the cutting edge of breast cancer and prostate cancer research. Dr. James L. Thomas, assistant professor of pharmacology in the Division of Basic Medical Sciences, received a $928,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to examine a new target protein for the treatment of breast and prostate cancer - research that could lead to the development of better treatments for the cancers.
McDONOUGH - Beginning this fall, Mercer University's James and Carolyn McAfee School of Theology will offer three of the core courses for its master's programs at the Henry County Regional Academic Center. In addition, students can also take two courses online as well - one in the fall and one in the spring - allowing them to take a large portion of their master's core courses without having to travel to the Atlanta campus.

MACON - Mercer University graduate student Elizabeth Filippo recently published a feature article in the one of the major technical communication journals, Intercom. Filippo, of Waukesha, Wisc., is working Online through the School of Engineering's Master of Science in Technical Communication and will complete her degree in August.
