Two Mercer University professors will attend the Republican and Democratic National Conventions in the coming days. David Gushee, Ph.D., Distinguished University Professor of Christian Ethics, will be a panelist for a discussion on faith at the Democratic National Convention on Thursday in Denver, Colo. Gregory Domin, Ph.D., an associate professor of political science, is leading a group of students in a seminar course during the Republican National Convention in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minn., from Aug. 24-Sept. 5.
ATLANTA - A team of Mercer students and faculty, funded by the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, will travel to Haiti on Monday to train teachers and pastors through a series of courses aimed at combating psychological trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder and preparing schools for future disasters. The courses will help victims of the Jan. 12 earthquake that devastated the country, killing more than 300,000 people and injuring thousands more.
MACON/ATLANTA - Mercer University has named Jason Rollins director of graduate recruiting for the University's Eugene W. Stetson School of Business and Economics. Rollins previously served as marketing manager for Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. In his new position at Mercer, he will oversee recruiting efforts for a number of programs within the School.
MACON, Ga. - The Mercer University Educational Opportunity Center has received a renewal grant of $1.86 million from the United States Department of Education to continue to provide information and counsel to individuals wanting to expand their education beyond high school. The grant to Mercer, which will be distributed over four years, was one of only three awarded to educational institutions in Georgia.   "This grant renewal is another indication of Mercer's commitment to helping young people pursue higher education in Central Georgia," said Mercer University President William D. Underwood. "Mercer's Educational Opportunity Center has enabled thousands of adults and high school students realize their dream of post-secondary education."   The grant takes effect Sept. 1 and funds the Center's outreach to U.S. citizens living in an eight-county area around Macon. MACON - Mercer's Binary Bears are 6,800 miles away preparing to compete in the 2007 ACM International Computer Programming Contest in Tokyo, Japan, but fans are just a mouse-click away from the latest updates on the team. Mercer's Computer Science Department has developed a way for fans of the computer programming team to keep up with the team's activities this week as the team prepares for, and competes in, the World Finals.
