Macon, Ga. - The Board of Trustees of Mercer University, in its annual spring meeting, approved several historic motions today. The two-and-a-half-hour session was the last regular Trustees meeting of Mercer President R. Kirby Godsey's 27-year administration. Trustees took action to amend the University's charter, establish a school of music, and name the historic Administration Building.    In a final step in the discontinuance of the University's relationship with the Georgia Baptist Convention, the Trustees amended Mercer's charter to give the Board of Trustees "the exclusive authority to determine the eligibility and qualifications of any person for service on the Board of Trustees, and said determination shall be final and conclusive."  This action removed all authority the Georgia Baptist Convention had in the approval process of electing Trustees.   As part of the University's commitment to sustaining its Baptist identity, the Trustees added to the...
MACON, Ga. - Mercer University's Tift College of Education will host the premiere science teacher education conference in the region when it welcomes the Southeastern Association of Science Teacher Education to campus on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 6-7.   The event is the largest of the Association of Science Teacher Education annual conferences. Attendees will learn about breakthroughs in science education research as well as the latest trends in teaching. The conference offers a forum for graduate students and practicing teachers to explore innovative ideas to enhance science teaching and learning with science education faculty.    Stephen Pruitt, science and mathematics program manager for the Georgia Department of Education will deliver the keynote address on Saturday during a luncheon, which will also feature award presentations. Tift College of Education is expanding several programs, including the graduate program. The College's Master of Education degree with a concentration in early childhood education, which is currently offered on the Atlanta campus, also will be available at the Douglas County and Henry County Regional Academic Centers beginning this fall.
MACON - The 2011 Mercer Law Review Symposium on Friday will focus on "Citizenship and Civility in a Divided Democracy: Political, Religious and Legal Concerns" as part of the University-wide Mercer Lyceum. The symposium will feature internationally renowned experts on political, legal and religious issues and will take place in the moot courtroom of Mercer Law School from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. It is free and open to the public.
