CORAL GABLES, Fla. - The Mercer baseball squad defeated No. 2 Miami, 8-5, on Saturday night. The Bears were out-hit 10-5, but took advantage of their opportunities in starting the season with their second straight win.
MACON - Mercer University's fall enrollment increased by a healthy 5.2 percent over the fall of 2007, setting a record as the highest enrollment in Mercer's history.Based on official 15th class day numbers, Mercer has enrolled a total of 7,573 students, shattering the previous record fall enrollment of 7,200, set in 2001 and tied last fall. The 599 entering freshmen on the Macon campus recorded 25th/75th percentile SAT scores of 1080/1290. It is the largest freshman class since 2005. The most significant gains in enrollment were recorded in Mercer's Tift College of Education, which saw an increase of 314 students, or 21.9 percent over last year's figures. Other significant increases were recorded by the College of Continuing and Professional Studies - up 81 students, or 11.8 percent over last year - and the School of Medicine, which showed an increase of 54 students, or 15 percent, including 30 first-year M.D. students in the School's new four-year medical program on the Savannah...
MACON - Mercer University, in partnership with the Center for Health and the Global Environment at Harvard Medical School, will hold a conference, titled "Caring for Creation: A Scientific and Theological Response," on the Macon campus Oct. 29-31. The conference will include two days of lectures and discussions on Oct. 29 and 30 and will conclude with a green day of service in the Macon community on Saturday, Oct. 31.
ATLANTA - Mercer University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences announced Gina J. Ryan, Pharm.D., of Lilburn, Ga., as this year's recipient of the Distinguished Educator Award. Announced at the college's 2007 commencement in May, the award recognizes an outstanding faculty member of the college who has made significant contributions in the area of teaching.
  (MACON) - The 2004 Mercer Jazz Festival will be held Saturday, April 17, at 7:30 p.m., at The Grand Opera House, 651 Mulberry St.   Tickets are $5 for the general public; admission is free with a Mercer ID.   Led by Monty Cole, director of Jazz Studies at Mercer, this year's concert will feature guest artist Brad Goode (pictured left), who was described as "lyrical genius of the trumpet...The young demon of bebop" by Larry Kart of The Chicago Tribune.   The Jazz Festival will kick off with a combo set of Cole on saxophone; Goode, trumpet; Bob Barnett, bass; Steve Schanin, drums and Jim McKillip, piano. MACON - Two Mercerians were among the seven individuals announced Thursday as the new inductions into the the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame. The Honors Court met on Thursday and selected Al Ciraldo, Edward Everett, Ernie Johnson, Sam Mitchell, Larry Rakestraw, Ronald Simmons and Suzanne Yoculan as the Hall of Fame Class of 2010. These seven individuals were chosen from an eligible pool of 252 nominees as those men and women who best exemplify the tradition of sports excellence in the State of Georgia.
MACON - Mercer University will hold a special evening Chapel service on Thursday featuring a lecture by Mercer Chancellor R. Kirby Godsey on his new book, Is God a Christian? The lecture begins at 7 p.m. in Newton Hall on the University's Macon campus. The event is part of the University's fall chapel service series, which features a special emphasis in support of the new Universitywide Lyceum program and Mercer's participation in President Obama's national Interfaith and Community Service Campus Challenge. The lecture is free and open to the public.
CNBC senior analyst and financial industry expert Ron Insana will address Mercer University's Executive Forum on March 23. Insana will give a lunch presentation at the Capital City Club, 7 Harris St., Atlanta, at noon and a dinner presentation at 6:30 p.m. in Macon at the University Center.
