KENNESAW, Ga. - The Mercer men's basketball team topped league-leading Kennesaw State, 77-70, Saturday night in Atlantic Sun Conference action at the KSU Convocation Center. The Bears avenged an earlier loss to the Owls suffered just nine days ago in Macon.
After guard Jacob Skogen opened the scoring with a 12-foot jumper in the lane, the Owls went on a 7-2 run, grabbing an early 7-4 lead. But the Bears battled back with a 9-2 run of their own to take a 13-7 lead with just over 13 minutes left in the opening half. Skogen's 3-pointer from the left side capped the run.
After the Owls closed the gap to just two, at 19-17 with under eight minutes to go, sophomore Sam Dolan hit one-of-two free throws, and following a 3-pointer by guard Montavious Waters from the right wing and a deuce by Andrew Brown from just inside the arc, the Bears took an eight-point lead, their largest of the opening stanza. A free throw by Skogen at the 1:20 mark gave Mercer (5-12,...
MACON, Ga. - Down two at halftime, the Mercer women's basketball team battled back for a 61-57 win over first-place East Tennessee State Saturday afternoon at the University Center.
A pair of 3-pointers from Erin Keller book sparked an opening run at the beginning of the game for Mercer as Tanya Kessenich, Sarah Russell and Zsaquez Flucker all contributed during the stretch. Michelle DeVault sank a trio of treys during a 14-4 run for Lady Bucs, tying things at 16.
East Tennessee State (12-6, 8-3 A-Sun) jumped out to an eight-point lead to open the second half as DeVault hit a pair of 3-pointers and B.J. Banjo added a trey and layup.
The teams seemed to trade buckets almost every time down court as Mercer (10-7, 7-3 A-Sun) could not take the lead and ETSU could not pull away. Rhonda Owens kept the Bears in the game late, scoring eight of her 10 points in the second half with all five of her rebounds coming in the second...

Game Notes (pdf)
The Bears are coming off their first road victory of the season, an 82-81 overtime win past Stetson that also snapped the Bears' five-game winless streak. In the first-ever meeting between Mercer and Kennesaw State just nine days ago, the Owls handed Mercer its first home loss of the season, 63-57.
"It will be a tough challenge to play the number one team on their home court," said Mercer head coach Mark Slonaker. "We want to go in and build on the momentum off the road win at Stetson. The last meeting against Kennesaw State was a hard-fought game and we expect nothing less on Saturday." Freshman guard Montavious Waters, who missed the first meeting...

The Lady Owls trimmed the lead down to five with 7:19 remaining in the half off a Shavonder Clarke jumper, but Tanya Kessenich pushed the Bears' lead back to nine with consecutive layups.
Mercer (9-7, 6-3 A-Sun) continued to dominate the paint in the second half led by Sarah Russell and Kessenich. The Bears took advantage of the Lady Owls collapsing on the paint as Sally Skeldon hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give Mercer a 10-point lead with 13:24 remaining.
Kennesaw State (2-14, 2-8 A-Sun) cut the lead to seven twice but was unable to get any closer. Both teams mishandled the ball at times but...
