Macon, Ga.- Mercer University sophomore Amanda Chappell of Tullahoma, Tenn., and engineering assistant professor Renee Rogge, Ph.D., are reaching for the stars -- literally. The student-professor team is working on a project that will benefit astronauts. With a $16,000 grant from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the team is creating a 3-D digital model of a human body. This will enable NASA researchers to better evaluate space suits and hardware used by astronauts. It's the continuation of a project Rogge began this summer when she served as a NASA Faculty Fellow at Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, for 10 weeks. The new NASA grant will enable Rogge and Chappell to work on the project through August. Once complete, the 3-D model should improve the quality of life for astronauts. The Walter F. George School of Law of Mercer University continues to advance in the national rankings due in good part to the opinions of the nation's judges and lawyers. In the 2007 U.S. News and World Report edition of America's Best Graduate Schools now hitting the stands, the school was rated an average of 3 out of a possible 5 by judges and lawyers across the nation, which accounts for 15 percent of a school's overall ranking.
MACON - The Board of Trustees of Mercer University, in its spring meeting, approved unanimously the establishment of the eleventh school of the University - a school of music. The action came after University President R. Kirby Godsey announced a significant gift from Carolyn Townsend McAfee and J. Thomas and Julie Crangle McAfee to endow the new school.
ATLANTA - Rachel L. Davenport of Stone Mountain, Ga., received the prestigious Reuben C. Hood Award during the 2007 commencement of Mercer University's College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in May. Given in honor of a founder and longtime dean of the 103-year-old College, the award is presented annually to the student who has the highest scholastic average in the graduating class of the Doctor of Pharmacy Program. Dr. Davenport completed her four years of pharmacy studies at Mercer with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average.

MACON - Because of inclement weather at the host site on Jan. 19, the Georgia Collegiate Wrestling Championships were postponed and moved to Mercer University. The event will now be held Saturday, Jan. 26 in the gymnasium of the Communication and Theater Arts on Mercer's Macon campus.

  Mercer's 14th annual "Big" Auction to benefit the athletic program will be held at the Grand Opera House Tuesday, May 21.     Silent items will be up for bid from 12 noon until 7 p.m., with the live items going on the block at 7:30 p.m. There is no admission charge.     Atlanta, Ga.-Hewitt W. "Ted" Matthews, Ph.D., dean of Mercer University Southern School of Pharmacy has received the prestigious Chauncey I. Cooper Award given by the National Pharmaceutical Association (NPhA). The presentation was made at the NPhA annual meeting held in Las Vegas, Nev. The award, established to honor the founder of NPhA, is the highest award given by the organization. It recognizes an individual who has shown, sustained and distinguished service to the profession of pharmacy. In addition to his role at the School of Pharmacy, which celebrates its centennial this year, Dean Matthews has contributed to the pharmacy profession through his leadership in numerous professional organizations.
