MACON - Daniel Sandweiss, Ph.D., an archaeologist and author researching the link between climate change and prehistoric cultures, will give the inaugural Sigma Xi Distinguished Lecture at Mercer University at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 25, on Mercer's Macon campus. Sandweiss will give a lecture entitled "Explorations with Thor Heyerdahl: Peruvian Pyramids and a Cuban Connection," about the legendary explorer and scientist's work in Peru and later in Cuba.   The event will be held in the Charles H. Andrews Classroom, Room 251 of Stetson Hall. MACON - The Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU) has selected the Beall's Hill Development urban design and architectural guidelines to be among the best in the world in representing excellence in urban design. This year, CNU, one of the nation's leading organizations in promoting sound urban design and walkable, mixed-use cities and towns, chose only 14 Charter Award recipients from 136 submissions. Of the 14 recipients, only eight projects were in the United States, with Beall's Hill being one of only three in the Southeast. Twenty-one exceptionally talented high school strings musicians, from eleven states and Canada, have been selected to participate in the second annual Robert McDuffie & Friends Labor Day Festival for Strings, held at the Mercer University Townsend School of Music in Macon, Aug. 31-Sept. 4. The intense five-day festival and musical learning extravaganza will provide the students an opportunity to study at Mercer with world-renowned violinist and Distinguished University Professor of Music Robert McDuffie and some of the nation's foremost concert artists. Stetson School of Business and Economics will hold a free reception and information session for its new 16-month accelerated Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) degree as well as its Flexible MBA. ATLANTA - The Georgia Research Alliance has funded a new collaborative research project, led by Mercer University professor Dr. Martin D'Souza, to explore using nanotechnology to deliver a pneumonia vaccine. Dr. D'Souza, professor in the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, will collaborate on the $100,000 grant with researchers from Emory University and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
ATHLETIC AUCTION ITEMS MACON, Ga. - Mercer's 19th annual "Big Auction," to benefit the Bears' athletic program, will be held Tuesday, May 15, at the Grand Opera House. Silent items will be up for bid from 12-7 p.m., with live items going on the block at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free.
