TROY, Ala. -- The Mercer women's basketball team will play Belmont in the opening round of the Atlantic Sun Basketball Championship Thursday at Troy State.   The Bears, number six seed in the A-Sun Tourney, will tip off against the number three seed Bruins at 2:15 CST.   The winner will advance to the semi-finals Friday at 5 p.m. CST against the winner of #2 Florida Atlantic and #7 Campbell.   The championship game will be played Saturday at 3 p.m. CST. MACON, Ga.--The Mercer softball team sealed a 2-1 extra inning victory over Eastern Kentucky in the championship game of the Holiday Inn Classic at Bear Field as Stephanie Barrett singled in Jennifer Dolan to score the final run in the bottom of the eighth.    Mercer had reached the championship game after defeating Eastern Kentucky in Game Six 1-0 and then defeating Radford in Game Seven 6-1. Eastern Kentucky had beaten Austin Peay State University in Game Eight to earn its way to the championship.    In the championship, Mercer scored first when Stacy Nagel smacked a solo home run, her third of the tournament and her sixth of the season, to put the Bears on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth.    The Colonels tied the game in the top of the fifth when Elise Burch doubled and then scored on an error by pitcher Chris Mattice.  Mattice didn't get rattled, however, as she pitched all eight innings and earned the win.  She allowed...

ATLANTA - The American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) has awarded a research grant to Mercer University Southern School of Pharmacy faculty member Christine Y. Hon for her study on histamine pharmacodynamics and genotypes. A resident of DeKalb County, Hon was one of 14 faculty members in the United States selected to receive a grant under the AACP's New Investigators Program (NIP). Supported by the American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education, the NIP assists the research careers of new pharmacy faculty by providing start-up funding for their research.
