MACON - Mercer University's 10th Annual College of Liberal Arts Lecture Series, which begins in September, will center on the theme of "National Identity and the Future of Democracy: Immigration and its Consequences." The Department of Political Science is sponsoring the six-lecture series, which will feature professors from inside and outside of Mercer speaking on a diverse array of topics related to the theme.

WHO: Thirty teams of computer programmers from more than a dozen colleges and universities across the Southeast, including Georgia Tech, Wofford College and Augusta State University. Mercer University's Binary Bears will field five teams in the event. WHAT: Mercer's computer science department's Spring Programming Competition WHEN:   1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, April 22 WHERE:  The Computer Science Building off College Street on Mercer's Macon Campus. WHY:  Teams are competing for awards in two divisions. The competition will pit three-person teams in the divisions against one another to see who can program their way through six to 10 problems the fastest and with the fewest errors. There will be many opportunities for video and photos. ATLANTA - The College of Continuing and Professional Studies of Mercer University will hold a free information session on its new Master of Science in Public Safety Leadership program from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 22, on the University's Atlanta campus. The event will be held in Room 213 of the Davis Building, 3001 Mercer University Dr., off I-85 just inside the northeast perimeter. Professors, administrators, and admissions and financial aid counselors will be available to talk with attendees.
MACON/ATLANTA - Two Mercer University faculty members were among 12 educators from across the state selected to participate in the prestigious Governor's Teaching Fellows Program this summer. Donald Ekong, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the School of Engineering, and John Summerville, R.N., M.N., an assistant professor in the Georgia Baptist College of Nursing, were selected to participate in the program's intensive summer symposium.
MACON - Henry E. Young, Ph.D., was presented the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Faculty Humanism in Medicine Award from Mercer University School of Medicine during commencement May 7 in Macon. Young - the first non-physician to ever receive the award in the School's history - was chosen by the Class of 2005 for his empathetic, sensitive and respective behavior in providing patient care.
LITHIA SPRINGS - Mercer University's Douglas County Regional Academic Center will begin its first session of the summer term on Friday, May 19. Adults interested in earning a bachelor's degree through the center's evening and weekend programs are invited to a free drop-in informational session at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 18. Academic advisors, professors, financial planning representatives and admissions counselors will be available to answer questions and discuss programs.        
MACON - Mercer University will present Academic All-American basketball player William L. Emerson with the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award, one of the two highest honors given to undergraduates, during its commencement on Saturday, May 13.   "In all my dealings with athletes over the last 30 some years, I've never known a better 'student-athlete,' and he's the first athlete to win the Sullivan award since I've been here," said Bobby Pope, Mercer's Director of Athletics for the past 17 years. "We've had some very good athletes and some very good students, but we've never had one like Will. He's as good as they come. He's a great representative for the University and I think he'll make a great physician." ATLANTA - Mercer University will hold commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 5, for nearly 200 future health care professionals in pharmacy and nursing at its Cecil B. Day Graduate and Professional Campus, 3001 Mercer University Drive, Atlanta. The two ceremonies are the first of 10 the University will hold in May as more than 1,500 students graduate from its 11 schools and colleges.
