ATLANTA – Mercer University's James and Carolyn McAfee School of Theology will welcome Dr. Michael Ruse, Lucyle T. Werkmeister Professor of Philosophy and director of the History and Philosophy of Science Program at Florida State University, for the eighth annual D. Perry and Betty Ginn Lectures on Christian Faith and Modern Science. The lectures will take place Oct. 26-27 on the Cecil B. Day Graduate and Professional Campus in Atlanta.
Dr. Ruse's research explores the relationship between science and religion. He is particularly well known for his work on the creationism/evolution controversy and the demarcation problem in science.
“We are delighted to host Dr. Ruse at McAfee School of Theology and anticipate that his lectures will offer a provocative opportunity for dialogue about the relationship between faith and science in an age that is seeking this sort of integration. Practitioners in both fields will find this lecture series helpful,” said Dr. Robert N. Nash, interim dean of the School.
Dr. Ruse will deliver two lectures, both free and open to the public, in Cecil B. Day Hall. The first, titled “Making Room for Faith in an Age of Science,” will take place on Oct. 26 at 7 p.m., and the second, titled “Darwinism – Challenges for the Christian,” will take place on Oct. 27 at 10:45 a.m.
A native of Birmingham, England, Dr. Ruse earned his bachelor's degree in philosophy and mathematics from the University of Bristol, master's degree in philosophy from McMaster University and Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Bristol. He taught at the University of Guelph in Canada from 1965 to 2000, when he left to join the faculty at Florida State.
Dr. Ruse has lectured at institutions such as the University of Oxford, Glasgow University and Baylor University, received several fellowships and honorary degrees, and written numerous books. He is the founder of the journal Biology & Philosophy and editor of the Cambridge University Press Series in the Philosophy of Biology.
The D. Perry and Betty H. Ginn Lectures in Christian Faith and Modern Science were endowed by the Rev. Dr. D. Perry Ginn to encourage a deeper understanding of science by clergy and students and how it relates to the Biblical revelation.
