ATLANTA-Four Mercer University Southern School of Pharmacy students recently placed second in the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy and Therapeutics Competition.   Alonzo J. Logan, Howie McKibbon, Amy Rorer and Peter Strickland won second place in the national competition held in Minneapolis, Minn., in April.   The four students had to analyze and justify a request to add a new drug to a managed care formulary using pharmoeconomic principles learned in class. They competed against approximately 10 teams from across the country.   The students are members of the Southern School of Pharmacy's chapter of the Academy of Managed Care. LITHIA SPRINGS - Mercer University's Douglas County Regional Academic Center will hold a free information session, beginning at 7 p.m., on Tuesday, Nov. 14, for individuals considering applying for the spring 2007 session, which begins Jan. 8. ATLANTA - Runners and walkers of all ages are invited to participate in the Second Annual Claypool Classic 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, April 14, on Mercer University's Cecil B. Day Campus, 3001 Mercer University Drive. The 5K course includes 2.1 miles on the road and 1 mile on a cross-country trail that is somewhat hilly. The run is part of the Run & See Georgia Grand Prix series.

Atlanta--Vijaya Subrahmanyam, associate professor of finance at the Eugene W. Stetson School of Business and Economics of Mercer University, was recently nominated a director for the League of Women Voters of Atlanta/Fulton County.    The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization, encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.Subrahmanyam said as a trained economist and educator with a strong interest and consulting background in public policy, she will strive to help educate the public about the democratic process.   "If I can in any way mobilize people, particularly women and minorities, to vote and make them realize that their vote matters, I think I may have made a difference," she said.   Subrahmanyam will serve as a director until 2006. MACON--Mercer University's student-athletes finished second in the Atlantic Sun Conference All-Academic standings for 2001-2002.   The final standings were released Wednesday morning by the A-Sun office. Belmont, in its initial season in the conference, caputured the Academic Champion Trophy with a record-setting 65% of its student-athletes posting a grade-point-average of 3.0 or better during this past academic year.   Mercer ranked second with 53% of its 193 student-athletes earning A-Sun All-Academic standing, including 87% of the men's and women's tennis teams.   For more information, click here: Atlantic Sun Academic Trophy

MACON - Mercer's Center for the Teaching of America's Western Foundations will hold its fourth annual Conference on Great Books and Ideas April 6 and 7 on the University's Macon campus. The conference is centered around Alexis de Tocqueville's Democracy in America and includes keynote addresses from two well-known experts on America's founding and Tocqueville in particular, Dr. Peter Lawler of Berry College, who will deliver the opening lecture April 6, and Dr. Harvey Mansfield of Harvard University, who will deliver the closing lecture April 7.
