MACON, Ga. - Mercer University has achieved a major step in its aspiration to become a national center for Baptist scholarship with today's announcement that the American Baptist Historical Society (ABHS) will consolidate and relocate its vast collections to the University's Atlanta campus.
MACON/ATLANTA - Nearly 1,500 students will participate in graduation ceremonies on Mercer University's Macon and Atlanta campuses in May. Awarding bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees, the University will hold 10 commencement ceremonies and hear from an array of renowned speakers, including several prominent Mercerians. MACON- As a part of the National Endowment for the Humanities Lecture Series, acclaimed authors and scholars Eric Klinenberg and Ellen Ruppel Shell will speak on two hot topics at Mercer University April 12 and 14. Both lectures are free and open to the public. Klinenberg, author of Heat Wave: A Social Autopsy of Disaster in Chicago, (University of Chicago Press, 2002), will speak at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, April 12, in the Mercer University School of Medicine Auditorium. In his presentation entitled "Why Heat Waves are so Deadly: Urban Vulnerability from Chicago to Paris," he will give insight into the social breakdown that occurred during the devastating heat wave in Chicago in July of 1995.  An assistant professor of sociology at New York University, Klinenberg is a Chicago native passionate about public and politically engaged social science. ATLANTA/MACON - Mercer University will hold on Saturday, May 6, the first three of its 10 commencement ceremonies. The University's three health schools will graduate their students in separate ceremonies on their respective campuses in Macon and Atlanta. The remaining seven ceremonies will take place over the next two weeks.   The Southern School of Pharmacy will graduate 130 doctor of pharmacy and Ph.D. candidates at 9 a.m. at Mercer's Cecil B. Day Graduate and Professional Campus in Atlanta. Dr. Carmen A. Catizone, CEO and executive director/secretary of the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy, will be the keynote speaker. ATLANTA- Lithia Springs resident Lynn Clemons was recently appointed director of the Organization Leadership Program for Mercer University's College of Continuing and Professional Studies.   Clemons has worked for Mercer for eight years, serving as a professor, mentor and coordinator of the University's Regional Academic Center in Douglas County.   The Organization Leadership Program is a degree completion program established by Mercer in 2000. To enroll in the program, students must have at least four years of work experience and 60 hours of previous college experience. As the program is designed for working adults, classes are held each Saturday for 16 months at Mercer's Cecil B. Day Campus in Atlanta and the Regional Academic Center in Douglas County.
