Mercer University's Board of Trustees approved promotions, tenure, emeriti status and sabbaticals for faculty from the University's 12 schools and colleges, as well as the University Libraries, during its April 25 meeting.
MACON -- Mercer Service Scholars Chelsea Flieger and Garret McDowell were invited to attend the fifth annual Clinton Global Initiative University (GGIU) national leadership conference in Washington, D.C., this weekend. The conference will be held at George Washington University today through Sunday. The honor is based on their work to launch and enhance Mercer's Local Engagement Against Poverty (LEAP) initiative.
Mercer has earned the highest federal recognition for community engagement, the Corporation for National and Community Service has announced. For the University’s exemplary service efforts and service to the community, CNCS named Mercer to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction for 2013. Mercer was one of only 113 higher education institutions nationwide named to the President's Honor Roll with Distinction. Mercer and Emory University were the only two institutions in Georgia on the Honor Roll with Distinction.
MACON - In preparation for the return of football in the fall of 2013, Mercer University announced Tuesday that season tickets will be available for the first time to the general public beginning on Thursday, August 16. Ticket prices are set at $75 per seat in the "White Section" (between the 35-yard markers) and $50 per seat for the "Orange Sections" (between the end zones and the 35-yard markers) in the west stands. Each $75 or $50 season ticket will provide admission to all eight home games, including Homecoming, in 2013. "This is an exciting time for Mercer Athletics and the Mercer football program," Director of Athletics Jim Cole said. "We are happy to offer this opportunity to the general public and thrilled with the support we have received so far from our alumni and donors." MACON - Mercer University will host two one-man plays this week featuring the Rev. Al Staggs. The first will portray the life of Clarence Jordan, the founder of the Koinonia Community, on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Newton Chapel. The second will follow the life of Dietrich Bonheoffer on Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Newton Chapel. The events, co-sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and the Office of the University Minister, are free and open to the public.
Dr. Zipangani Vokhiwa, associate professor of science in Mercer University's Penfield College, was recently named to the board of the Georgia Chapter of the Fulbright Association.
MACON -- Mercer University's QuadWorks has announced the lineup of performers to appear at this year's BearStock outdoor music festival. Headlining this year's Bearstock will be Far East Movement and Yellowcard. Other bands performing include: Ocean is Theory, theKey, Jubee and the Morning After, Emily Hearn, Saint Francis, Young Benjamin, The Levee, Powers, Argonauts, The Silver Comet, The Front Bottoms and Josh Foster. All bands are family friendly.
The Grand Opera House will host a staged reading of the play "Combustible/Burn," directed by Scot Mann, Feb. 28, at 8 p.m., as the latest event during the 2013-14 academic year to be organized under the theme "Looking Back & Moving Forward: Celebrating a Half-Century of Integration at Mercer University."
Mercer Theatre director, professor and alumnus Scot Mann has his feet in two worlds this month with the opening of two musicals in which he plays major roles behind the scenes. Mercer Theatre's co-production with Mercer Opera of Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music opens at The Grand Opera House on April 13. His second role as fight director for the premiere of the star-studded production of a new play, Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, opens at The Alliance Theatre, Atlanta's reigning professional playhouse located at the Woodruff Center, on Wednesday.
MACON - Five upcoming graduates from Mercer University have accepted the challenge of Teach For America, the highly selective program that places graduates from the country's best colleges in low-income schools. The group joins a growing list of Mercer alumni who have served in the program, which provides training, ongoing support, mentoring and grants to participants. All five will graduate on May 12 from the College of Liberal Arts. The students are: Sarah Brown, Josh Coleman, Christina Kivi, Katie Matthews and Kyle Shook.
